From the Editor

Hi, everybody!

I’m so glad Steve Hirschhorn was among us during the last week of February. We held meetings with the Director of the Chilean Education Ministry's English Open Doors Programme, University Deans and Heads of the English departments in Santiago and Viña del Mar. We’re also planning to visit Argentina soon.

On 29th February 2008 he conducted a workshop called: Brain Function in Language Learning at Hotel San Martin in Viña del Mar.Teachers enjoyed this session which offered a model on which we can base our work as teachers and he pointed out that though the brain is the centre of our learning we often tend to ignore the way it works.

If you are one of the few who didn't meet him in person or you still want to go on learning from him you can join people from around the world, visiting Steve’s forum. To read more click Steve's workshop and forum.

Happy Teaching!

International Year of Languages

International Mother Language Day has been celebrated on 21 February each year since 2000. It marks the particular importance in 2008, proclaimed International Year of Languages by the United Nations General Assembly.

UNESCO’s Director-General, Koichiro Matsuura, delivered the message to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity on this occasion and one of the most important things he pointed out were:

“The ninth celebration of International Mother Language Day on 21 February is of particular importance in this year of 2008, proclaimed International Year of Languages by the United Nations General Assembly, which has entrusted UNESCO with the task of coordinating it.

So this International Mother Language Day is an especially promising opportunity to recall what is stake. Languages are absolutely vital to the identity of groups and individuals, and their peaceful coexistence. They are a strategic factor in advances towards sustainable development and the harmonious coordination of the global and the local.

"For language teachers, this celebration is very important so it would be great to do some kind of research or project with your students, to make them aware of the importance of Language and its usage.

Easter Around the World

Easter is certainly one of the most important celebrations for Christianity. Behind the basic concept that most people celebrate the resurrection of Christ, it is interesting to see how different peoples celebrate Easter in different ways. For that reason I’ve compiled a group of links to bring that information to you so that both teachers and students can become culturally aware.Easter around the world
