The University of Sussex is one of the UK's leading universities. The Language Institute, a department within the School of Humanities, runs language courses all year round for adult learners who wish to reach a high standard of English.

Many of our students are preparing to enter undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes at universities where the language of instruction is English; others come to Sussex to improve their English-language skills for career purposes.

The language Institute also has an extensive teacher-training programme, with courses for those wishing to become teachers of English as a foreign language, as well as in-service development courses for those who are already practising teachers. We also carry out consultancies and run tailor-made courses in all areas of teacher education and language training.

Modern technology properly integrated into language learning programme can help students make maximum progress, and therefore they offer students the latest in digital multimedia language teaching and learning equipment in their Language Learning Centre.

Courses

Methodology Update Overseas Teacher Course

This two-week course will comprise

language development and practice in all skills
topics relating to British life and culture which are of interest to the group
trends, developments and current thinking in methodology
course design and lesson planning
exposure to current materials in use: course books, audio, video, CALL, language laboratory
production of materials for use in participants'home teaching situation

The precise content of each component will be determined by the needs and desires of the group members.

Participants completing the course are awarded a University of Sussex Certificate of Attendance

Using Computers and Multimedia in ELT Overseas Teacher Course

Participants will develop new skills and techniques to use in the classroom incorporating technology such as:

The Internet
Computer Assisted language Learning software
Using computer graphics and Microsoft programmes for teaching purposes
satellite TV
Video

Participants will also

Improve their own knowledge and performance of English
Develop teaching materials to use on their return
Have the oportunity to work on individual projects of their choice
